Today we ate this flammkuchen variation and it was really delicious!

We had a leftover piece of Turkish bread and Paul came up with this amazing idea to try and make flammkuchen with it.

So Flammkuchen are officially made with a thin pizza-like crust, but our Turkish bread gives this recipe a little twist! The Air Fryer makes the outer edges crunchy, but you still have that sweet softness on the inside of the bread.

For toppings, flammkuchen usually have creme fraiche, onion and bacon as a base. You can add any other toppings you like!

Serve with a salad on the side to enjoy a light dinner.

Flammkuchen variation with Turkish bread. Made in the Air Fryer. Serve with a salad on the side.

Prep Time 25 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • ½ Turkish bread
  • 125 g creme fraiche
  • 125 g Greek yoghurt
  • 75 g bacon slices
  • 2 onions, cut in half or full rings

Spices

  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾ tsp pepper
  • 2 ½ tsp thyme

Requirements

  • Air Fryer
  • Pan

Instructions

  1. Cut the ½ Turkish bread in half once again, lengthwise this time. Flatten the two pieces of bread by firmly pressing them with a chef’s knife or spatula. We want them as flat as possible.
  2. Mix the creme fraiche, Greek yoghurt, nutmeg, salt and pepper in a suitable bowl so you get a smooth mixture.
  3. Carefully fry the bacon pieces in the pan without them becoming crunchy. Take the bacon out of the pan before that starts to happen.
  4. Use the same pan to briefly fry the onions until slightly brown (just before they are done). Take the pan off the stove once that happens. If the bacon fat is not sufficient, you can use a squirt of oil.
  5. Cover the pieces of Turkish bread with the creme fraiche-Greek yoghurt mixture and be generous. We want a thick layer of sauce on top of each to prevent the flammkuchen from becoming too dry.
  6. Next, add the onions, bacon pieces and thyme as the finishing touch.
  7. Place a piece of prepped Turkish bread in the Air Fryer for 10 minutes at 180 ℃ / 360 ℉.
  8. Guten appetit!

Notes

  • If it doesn’t fit in your Air Fryer basket, you can either cut the bread in half or try and see if it fits in the Air Fryer pan.
